Five Companies Using Social Media for Sustainability

Good sustainability calls for stakeholder engagement and what better way to engage with your customers, suppliers, competitors and fans than through social media.  I was asked at a conference recently which companies are getting it right and I actually found it hard to answer.  I don’t have one clear case study in mind.  It seems like companies are doing video really well but social media still seems more challenging to get right.

Still, here are some good examples and an interesting Q&A session from The Guardian Sustainable Business on ‘Social media and sustainability’.

   1. Unilever’s Sustainable Living videos are really excellent, especially the Five Levers for Change.

  2.  The Guardian’s Sustainable Business site has really good Twitter, webinars and interactive content.

  3.  Nike gets good write-ups for its social media in general and they have a good website on sustainability.  It’s not really sustainability social media but as sustainability is embedded in their brand, they may feel they don’t need to shout about it.

  4.  Timberland’s community page puts sustainability centre stage and encourages interaction.

   5.  Sustainability leaders 1% for the Planet uses their Twitter feed for updates on new members, member activities and the non-profits which are supported by the initiative.  The Facebook page shows the 1% Team biking, kayaking and more.  It’s also a platform for pushing out calls for support on environmental issues.

Who do you think is doing a good job of social media on sustainability?

This is the last of our Holiday Season ‘Our Five Green Things’ blogs.  We hope you enjoyed reading them as much as we did preparing them.
